Ann was born about 1846 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Ann's father was John Black and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) #2 Thomson.  Her paternal grandparents were James Black and Anne Brown; her maternal grandparents were John Thomson and Marion Wallace. She had five brothers and a sister, named Andrew, John, Robert, William, Hugh and Elizabeth Alison.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
