Catherine was born on June 24th, 1824 in Argyll, Scotland.  Catherine's father was Malcolm McAlpine and her mother was Mary Leitch.  Her paternal grandparents were Malcolm McAlpine and Catherine Paterson; her maternal grandparents were John Leitch and Isobella McLachlan. She had a brother and a sister, named Malcolm and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the three children.  She died at the age of 51 on October 2nd, 1875 in Dunamuck, Glassary, Argyll.
