John was born in 1835 in Ellesmere, Shropshire, England.  John's father was Edward Davies and his mother was Sarah Evans. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, George, Matthew, William, Margaret and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
