George was born on January 9th, 1812 in Witherslack, Westmorland, England.  George's father was Robert NELSON and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, Thomas, Roger, Mary, Jane, Ann, Isabella and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
