Edwin was born in 1833 in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire.  Edwin's father was William Shackleton and his mother was Elisabeth Shackleton Smith.  His paternal grandfather was Abraham Shackleton; his maternal grandparents were William Smith and Elisabeth (Betty). He had three brothers named Abram, Richard and John.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
