Mary was born in January 1890 in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire.  Mary's father was Thos Smith Shackleton and her mother was Rachel Ann Lister.  Her paternal grandparents were William Shackleton and Sarah Ann Smith; her maternal grandparents were Robert Lister and Mary Anne Stell. She had a brother named Thomas Smith.  She was the older of the two children.
