John was born in 1782 in Kirk Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland.  John's father was David Blyth and his mother was Elizabeth Clarke.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Blyth and Jane Gordon. He had five brothers and two sisters, named David, Charles, Andrew, George, Link, Mary and Jean.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 78 on July 14th, 1860.
