Mary was born in 1790 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland.  Mary's father was David Blyth and her mother was Elizabeth Clarke.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles Blyth and Jane Gordon. She had six brothers and a sister, named David, Charles, Andrew, John, George, Link and Jean.  She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
