Henry was born in 1856 in Leek, Staffordshire, England.  Henry's father was Henry Davies and his mother was Frances.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Davies and Sarah Evans. He had three sisters named Frances, Margaret and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four children.
