Alfred was born in 1884 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.  Alfred's father was James William Hodgson and his mother was Emma Hargreaves.  His maternal grandparents were ? Hargreaves and Ann. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Harry, Samuel, Jack, James William, George B, Alice and Amelia.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
