May was born in 1876 in Bardsea, Urswick, Lancashire.  May's father was James Jackson and her mother was Fanny.  Her paternal grandparents were George JACKSON and Agnes Holme. She had three brothers and three sisters, named George, James, William, Kate D, Fanny and Ada.  She was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
