Isabella was born on January 1st, 1835 in St Martins, Perthshire, Scotland.  Isabella's father was Thomas Allison and her mother was Margaret Robb.  Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Allison and Marion Finlay. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Peter, Thomas, Margaret Ogilvie and Mary Anne.  She was the youngest of the five children.
