Thomas was born on October 2nd, 1826 in St Martins, Perthshire, Scotland.  Thomas' father was Thomas Allison and his mother was Margaret Robb.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Allison and Marion Finlay. He had a brother and three sisters, named Peter, Margaret Ogilvie, Mary Anne and Isabella.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
