Tam was born about 1808 in Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland.  Tam's father was Charles Blyth and his mother was Esther Faa.  His paternal grandparents were David Blyth and Elizabeth Clarke; his maternal grandparents were Wull Faa and Mabel Allan. He had ten brothers and four sisters, named David, William, John, Infant, Andrew, Infant, George, Infant, Charles, Infant, Esther Faa, Jeanie, Betty and Helen.  He was the nineth oldest of the fifteen children.
