Robert was born in 1839 in Allithwaite, Lancashire, England.  Robert's father was John Barber and his mother was Margaret. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Joseph, Benjamin Powell, Bill Taylor, Richard, Unknown, Jane and Mary Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
