Sarah was born in 1862 in Ellesmere, Shropshire.  Sarah's father was Matthew Davies and her mother was Fanny.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Davies and Sarah Evans. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Charles, Edwin, George, Wilton, Harry, Elizabeth, Fanny and Alice.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
