Wilton was born in 1878 in Ellesmere, Shropshire, England.  Wilton's father was Matthew Davies and his mother was Fanny.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Davies and Sarah Evans. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Charles, Edwin, George, Harry, Sarah, Elizabeth, Fanny and Alice.  He was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
