Elizabeth was born in 1847 in Milnthorpe, Westmorland, England.  Elizabeth's father was George Nelson and her mother was Harriet Atkinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert NELSON and Mary; her maternal grandmother was Elizabeth. She had two brothers named Timothy and Robert.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
