Robert was born in 1849 in Milnthorpe, Westmorland, England.  Robert's father was George Nelson and his mother was Harriet Atkinson.  His paternal grandparents were Robert NELSON and Mary; his maternal grandmother was Elizabeth. He had a brother and a sister, named Timothy and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the three children.
