Charles was born in 1844 in Aberford, Yorkshire, England.  Charles' father was Jonathan Winterburn and his mother was Sarah Turpin.  His maternal grandparents were John Turpin and Mary Wilson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, John, William, Henry, Edward, Mary, Alice and Eliza.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine children.
