Edward was born in 1853 in Aberford, Yorkshire, England.  Edward's father was Jonathan Winterburn and his mother was Sarah Turpin.  His maternal grandparents were John Turpin and Mary Wilson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, John, Charles, William, Henry, Mary, Alice and Eliza.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
