John was born in 1841 in Aberford, Yorkshire, England.  John's father was Jonathan Winterburn and his mother was Sarah Turpin.  His maternal grandparents were John Turpin and Mary Wilson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, Charles, William, Henry, Edward, Mary, Alice and Eliza.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
