Thomas was born on June 4th, 1809 in Crawfordjohn, Lanark.  Thomas' father was Thomas Templeton and his mother was Margaret Adamson.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Templeton and Margaret Wright. He had five brothers and a sister, named Walter, John, William, Archibald, Robert and Anna.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
