Walter was born on April 5th, 1815 in Crawford and Leadhills.  Walter's father was Thomas Templeton and his mother was Margaret Adamson.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Templeton and Margaret Wright. He had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, William, Archibald, Robert and Anna.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
