Margaret was born in 1711 in Ingleton, Yorkshire, England.  Margaret's father was Richard Guy and her mother was Emma Shepherd.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Guy and Mary Battersby; her maternal grandparents were Henry Shepherd and Mary Taylor. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Henry, Richard, Thomas, Mary, Agnes and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 86 in 1797.
