Robert was born in 1707 in Ingleton, Yorkshire, England.  Robert's father was Richard Guy and his mother was Emma Shepherd.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Guy and Mary Battersby; his maternal grandparents were Henry Shepherd and Mary Taylor. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Richard, Thomas, Mary, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
