Mary was born in 1709 in Ingleton, Yorkshire, England.  Mary's father was Richard Guy and her mother was Emma Shepherd.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Guy and Mary Battersby; her maternal grandparents were Henry Shepherd and Mary Taylor. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Henry, Richard, Thomas, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
