Gilbert was born on April 8th, 0185 in Barrmoor Cottages, SANQUHAR Dumfries & Galloway Scotland.  Gilbert's father was John Templeton and his mother was Francis Jamieson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Templeton and Margaret Adamson. He had four sisters named Harriet, Jane(t), Elizabeth and Francis.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had five half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Thomas, George, Archibald, Unknown, Robert, Margaret, Jean and Agnes.
