Margaret was born on November 11th, 1838 in Kirkconnel, Dumfries.  Margaret's father was John Templeton and her mother was Agnes Hogg.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Templeton and Margaret Adamson. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, George, Archibald, Unknown, Robert, Jean and Agnes.  She was the oldest of the eight children. She had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Gilbert, Harriet, Jane(t), Elizabeth and Francis.
