Jean was born on January 19th, 1840 in Torthorwald, Dumfries.  Jean's father was John Templeton and her mother was Agnes Hogg.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Templeton and Margaret Adamson. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, George, Archibald, Unknown, Robert, Margaret and Agnes.  She was the second oldest of the eight children. She had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Gilbert, Harriet, Jane(t), Elizabeth and Francis.
