Adam was born on February 4th, 1819 in Coylton, Ayrshire.  Adam's father was Samuel McVie and his mother was Jean McFadzean.  His maternal grandparents were James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, John, Samuel, Thomas #2, Cunniham Smith, Jean, Margaret and Elisabeth.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
