Margaret was born on September 25th, 1813 in Coylton, Ayrshire.  Margaret's father was Samuel McVie and her mother was Jean McFadzean.  Her maternal grandparents were James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, John, Samuel, Thomas #2, Cunniham Smith, Adam, Jean and Elisabeth.  She was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
