Thomas was born on June 8th, 1796 in Coylton, Ayrshire.  Thomas' father was Samuel McVie and his mother was Jean McFadzean.  His maternal grandparents were James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, John, Samuel, Thomas #2, Cunniham Smith, Adam, Jean, Margaret and Elisabeth.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
