Alexander was born on May 21st, 1798 in Coylton, Ayrshire.  Alexander's father was Samuel McVie and his mother was Jean McFadzean.  His maternal grandparents were James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, Samuel, Thomas #2, Cunniham Smith, Adam, Jean, Margaret and Elisabeth.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
