John was born about 1804 in Ayrshire, Scotland.  John's father was Samuel McVie and his mother was Jean McFadzean.  His maternal grandparents were James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, Samuel, Thomas #2, Cunniham Smith, Adam, Jean, Margaret and Elisabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.  He died on August 11th, 1857 in Croft Inn, Dreghorn, Ayr.
