Elisabeth was born on January 23rd, 1816 in Coylton, Ayrshire.  Elisabeth's father was Samuel McVie and her mother was Jean McFadzean.  Her maternal grandparents were James McFadzean and Elizabeth Doak. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, John, Samuel, Thomas #2, Cunniham Smith, Adam, Jean and Margaret.  She was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
