David was born on August 16th, 1835 in Riccarton, Ayrshire.  David's father was John Ness and his mother was Agnes Bell Thomson.  His paternal grandparents were William Ness and Agnes Sillars; his maternal grandparents were David Thomson and Margaret McHoul. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Margaret, William, John, George, James, Agnes, Ann Paterson, Sarah, Jane and Mary.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.
