Sarah was born on October 10th, 1819 in Monkton and Prestwick.  Sarah's father was John Ness and her mother was Agnes Bell Thomson.  Her paternal grandparents were William Ness and Agnes Sillars; her maternal grandparents were David Thomson and Margaret McHoul. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Margaret, William, John, George, James, David, Agnes, Ann Paterson, Jane and Mary.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
